Iso 14644 1 Cleanroom Standards

As of november 29th 2001 the federal standard 209e has been replaced with iso 14644 1.

The work of preparing international standards is normally carried out through iso technical committees. Whereas cleanliness standards were once defined by the federal standard 209e they have been replaced and simplified by iso with classifications 1 to 9. This standard applies in general to all cleanrooms. After ansi and iest petitioned to iso for new standards the first document of iso 14644 was published in 1999 iso 14644 1.

The iso 14644 1 2015 introduces the need of iso 21501 4 particle counters which assure all cleanroom certification is based on verified data accuracy and reliability. The need for a single standard for cleanroom classification and testing was long felt. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition iso 14644 1 1999 which has been technically revised throughout. In 2000 iso 14644 2 was published.

The cleanroom classification standards fs 209e and iso 14644 1 require specific particle count measurements and calculations to classify the cleanliness level of a cleanroom or clean area. Iso 14644 1 2015 does not provide for classification of particle populations that are outside the specified lower threshold particle size range 0 1 µm to 5 µm. To meet requirements of a clean room as defined by federal standard 209e and newer iso standards all clean rooms must not exceed a particulate count as specified in the air cleanliness class. Cleanroom users shall then look to iso 21501 as a method to meet cgmp eu gmp iso 14644 1 and other requirements.
